Fire Hazard Severity Zones - Map

AB 1054 is a California law created to reduce wildfires caused by utilities. It set up the California Wildfire Fund, which includes three major utilities: San Diego Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, and Pacific Gas & Electric.

The law requires these utilities to spend a total of $5 billion on wildfire safety upgrades, and they cannot earn a profit on this money. AB 1054 also requires each utility to submit a Wildfire Mitigation Plan to the California Public Utilities Commission.

These plans must cover at least three years and explain how the utility will maintain and improve its equipment to help prevent wildfires.

Getting Familiar With SGIP

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is an initiative by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) that rewards you with a rebate for installing battery storage in your home if you qualify.

You don’t have to pair your battery storage with solar panels to qualify for the SGIP rebate. However, there are benefits to doing so, especially in California, where there are also incentives for solar panel installation.

Battery Storage Incentives & Rebates

For homeowners and renters in California, a backup battery system may seem like a luxury. But for people who rely on electricity for medical equipment or well water, it can literally save your life during power outages.

Additionally, using residential battery storage during extreme heat or during times of increased fire risks common throughout California can help stabilize the energy grid and prevent blackouts.

Self-Generation Solutions

In response to California’s history of destructive wildfires, the state and local utilities collaborated to create a smarter energy solution — investing in localized self-generation systems. These programs reward homeowners who participate with bill credits and rebates for supporting distributed energy.

Your local utility company works with approved third-party administrators to review, verify, and approve eligible applications. Because program funding and qualifications differ by region, it’s best to confirm availability in your area before scheduling an assessment.

1. Site Assessment

A certified program administrator will review your property and confirm eligibility before your application can be submitted. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and depend on available funding.

2. Funding & Incentives

Once approved, your application is sent to your local utility to determine the type of self-generation equipment your home qualifies for. Incentive amounts vary depending on energy usage, system size, and location, helping reduce your overall installation cost.
